Interest high for ring dike funding in Red River Valley

Interest in a federal program that covers 75 percent of the cost of building ring dikes to protect farms from flooding has exceeded expectations in the Red River Valley.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service is adding money to the program after getting nearly double the applications expected. Counties along the Red River had the most applications, after record spring flooding.

NRCS initially had allocated $2 million to Minnesota and $1 million to North Dakota for ring dike construction. The agency now has raised each state's allocation to about $2.4 million.

Applications are ranked based on the contents of a farmstead and the environmental damage that might happen if it flooded.
