Drag race event this weekend in Brainerd

The revving of engines will fill the air near Brainerd this weekend, when the National Hot Rod Association's nationals are held at Brainerd International Raceway.

It's billed as the largest motor sports event in the Upper Midwest and one of the top events in drag racing, drawing the best drag racers in the country. Top dragsters reach speeds of more than 300 miles per hour.

Qualifying races begin Thursday morning. The event continues through Sunday.

The nationals are held in 23 locations. Brainerd is the 16th stop along the way.

Fans can get up close with cars and drivers because their tickets give them access to the pit. The event is also known for drawing legions of fans who camp near the racetrack.
