New lanes of 35W to begin opening

Several lanes of Interstate 35W in Minneapolis will open over the next week, as construction on a portion of the highway nears completion.

All lanes of northbound I-35W from 31st Street to downtown Minneapolis will be open to traffic starting tomorrow.

The northbound I-35W exit to 35th St/36th St. will open on Sept. 11.

Next week, crews will begin installation of lighted striping that separates the new MnPASS Express Lanes on the freeway from the general traffic.

As a result, traffic on northbound I-35W between 42nd St. and 31st St. will shift from the inside to the outside three lanes for about three weeks starting Sept. 9.

The MnPASS Express Lane is scheduled to open for service on Sept. 30. The program offers solo drivers the choice to pay a toll to access the car pool lanes.

Construction on I-35W south of 42nd St. will continue through the completion of the Crosstown reconstruction project in 2010.

The work is part of the ongoing reconstruction of I-35W from Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis.
