Duluth to use state grant to fight urban blight

Duluth Mayor Don Ness says a $300,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety will be used to hire three people who'll work in some of the city's more rundown neighborhoods.

The grant made available through the federal stimulus money will pay for a community police officer, an assistant city attorney and a clerical crime analyst and will work in the hillside neighborhoods that include abandoned houses and trash-filled yards.

Lt. Eric Rish says the new officer will focus on a small area in the city's busiest central district to help produce immediate results.

The grant will also be used to help start block watch groups and get residents involved in the community in other ways again.
