Man convicted in Hastings veterans home death

A 45-year-old man who had been living at the Hastings veterans home was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder in the death of another resident.

A Dakota County jury deliberated for about three hours before announcing the verdict against Randall Sears.

Besides second-degree murder, Sears was convicted of first-degree assault in the beating of 54-year-old Richard Jackson, who died about three weeks after the attack in August 2008. Jackson died of extensive head injuries suffered in the attack.

The two men were acquaintances at the veterans home.

Sears is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 16 in Hastings.
