Officials ID man shot by Sherburne County deputies

Sherburne County officials have identified the man who was fatally shot by deputies outside the county's government center last Friday.

Sheriff Joel Brott said the two deputies shot and killed Dana Dempsey, 47, of Big Lake. Dempsey was scheduled to attend a hearing in Sherburne District Court. He became confrontational and pulled out a handgun, Brott said.

The deputies shot Dempsey, who was taken to Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Both deputies remain on paid administrative leave. Neither was injured.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is continuing to investigate the incident.
