Sioux Falls school custodian fired for carrying gun

An elementary school custodian in Sioux Falls has been fired for bringing a loaded handgun to work.

Forty-four-year-old Louis Thompson of Hartford was arrested last Thursday after another employee at Garfield Elementary discovered the gun in Thompson's coat pocket. The incident led to a 10-minute lockdown at the school.

Thompson said he forgot that he had the gun in his pocket, and apologized. Sioux Falls police say that Thompson did not threaten anyone, and was nowhere near the gun at the time of his arrest.

Co-worker Jeff Palmer says Thompson was known for shooting skunks and other predators on his drive to work.

Thompson also could face a misdemeanor criminal charge for possessing the gun on school property.
