Corrections officer charged with stealing Prius

A Dakota County corrections officer has been charged with stealing a Toyota Prius he had rented at the Twin Cities airport.

Antwayn Terrell Hunter, 30, of Cottage Grove, allegedly failed to return the car on June 16 as scheduled and kept it for another two months before he was arrested, according to the criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County.

An investigator with the Minneapolis Airport Police Department determined that Hunter worked at the Dakota County jail in Hastings. The investigator went to the jail but learned Hunter had just left in the vehicle. Hunter was later arrested at his home, the complaint said.

Dave Bellows, chief deputy for the Dakota County Sheriff's Office, said Hunter resigned from his job of overseeing inmates and handling other jail operations not long after he was arrested in late August. He also said the department had started its own investigation into the incident before Hunter resigned.

"Anytime that we're advised that one of our staff is under criminal investigation we take it very seriously," Bellows said.
