Volunteer sheriff's deputy remembered for service

A reserve deputy with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office who suffered fatal injuries while helping at a haunted house over the weekend is being remembered for his service to the community.

Michael Wilken, 56, of Newport, was hit by a vehicle on Saturday evening in Maplewood near the Fright Farm Haunted House, which is operated by the sheriff's office. Wilken died early Sunday morning at Regions Hospital from his injuries.

"Mike was an outstanding volunteer who loved serving others and gave his own time to help with numerous events in the community," Ramsey County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Bradt said in a news release.

Officials said Wilken had been a reserve deputy for 10 years and had volunteered at hundreds of events, including parades and community festivals. He also volunteered at parks and for the water patrol.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
