Wayzata shocks Woodbury to win girls' AA soccer title

The high school soccer season ended yesterday in Minnesota with a big upset.

The Woodbury girls' team was undefeated and ranked first in the nation going into yesterday's state championship game at the Metrodome. Their opponent, Wayzata, was also undefeated and eeked out a 2-1 win to take the Class AA title.

Wayzata scored first, but not until the second half - when senior Samantha Curtiss knocked one in during the 48th minute. Woodbury later tied it up on a penalty kick but Wayzata went ahead for good about 10 minutes later.

It was Woodbury's first loss in more than two seasons.

The Apple Valley boys' team--which is ranked 6th in the nation--cruised to its 8th state title in school history with a 4-0 win over Wayzata.

Two additional title games were played yesterday in Class 1A. Mahtomedi won the boys game; Orono won the girls.
