Candidate in Duluth requests election recount

A Duluth City Council candidate has requested a ballot recount after losing the race by 153 votes.

Gordon Grant, a candidate for the 4th District, received 1,779 votes last Tuesday. His opponent, Kerry Gauthier garnered 1,932 votes.

State statutes allow candidates to request a recount if the difference between the votes cast for the two candidates is less than one-half of one percent.

In the Duluth election, that percentage added up to 19 votes, within the margin to request a recount.

Neither Grant nor Gauthier immediately returned calls for comment.

According to a statement released by city officials, Grant will pay for the costs of the recount.

Elections officials will release additional information about the recount process Thursday.
