Discovery Center library to remain closed

The Minnesota Discovery Center won't be reopening its research library after all.

Iron Range Resources Commissioner Sandy Layman overturned the IRR board's decision to give the center $200,000 to reopen the history research library.

Monday the board approved Layman's request for $250,000 to pay outstanding claims, secure the center while it's closed and pay for an exam of its financial records.

IRR spokesman Lee Bloomquist said Thursday Layman does not support reopening the library pending a review of the center's finances.

The nonprofit center, formerly known as Ironworld, closed Nov. 20 because of a financial deficit. The IRR owns the center's buildings and many of the collections. The board is expected to make a decision on the future of the center next March.
