Independence party endorses candidate for state Senate seat
The Independence Party is backing a three-term mayor in a special state Senate election in southern Minnesota.
Waseca Mayor Roy Srp is running in the Jan. 26 special election in Senate District 26, the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Dick Day. Srp is a former Democrat who joined the Independence Party in 1997.
Srp says he filed as a candidate with the Secretary of State's office on Wednesday.
He says he would like to see the state cut spending and avoid tax increases. He says neither Democrats nor Republicans have solved Minnesota's financial problems.
Srp has the backing of former U.S. Rep. Tim Penny, the Independence Party candidate for governor in 2002.
Candidate filing for the special election opens Wednesday and runs through Dec. 29.
The rural state Senate district includes the cities of Faribault, Owatonna and Waseca.
