Minnesota National Guard officials are honoring several participants in its Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program.

The program is aimed at building a community support network for military personnel and their families through deployment and reintegration. Representatives from counties, cities, churches, colleges and companies were recognized Tuesday during a ceremony at Century College in White Bear Lake.

Maj. Gen. Larry Shellito said he wants the program to eventually grow beyond the military.

"My goal is that when the winds of war die down, hopefully, and things settle down that this not stop," Shellito said. "But it may shift over to some other special needs, special group to make it happen."

In addition to the ceremony, program organizers also held workshops with other business and civic leaders who want to join the support network.
