Man, 72, dies in Elk River train collision

A 72-year-old Elk River man is dead after his car collided with a freight train in Elk River.

Police Chief Jeff Beahen identifies the victim as Daniel Greene Sr.

Witnesses say Greene's car slowly edged forward under the railroad warning arms, then moved onto the tracks in front of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The train collided with the car, killing Greene instantly.

The railroad tracks have been cleared for freight trains and the Northstar commuter rail line, but Proctor Avenue was expected to be closed to traffic until Wednesday evening.

The crash remains under investigation.
