Willmar standoff ends with gunman subdued

A five-hour standoff ended early Friday when police in south central Minnesota wrestled a gun away from a man who had pointed the weapon at officers.

Willmar police were called to an apartment building shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday on a report that a man was threatening to kill himself. Other occupants in nearby apartments were evacuated.

Capt. David Wyffels says the man pointed his handgun at "three or four" officers, but no shots were fired.

Wyffels says that shortly after midnight Friday, tactical officers forced their way into a back bedroom in the apartment, shot the man with a bean bag-type gun and wrestled his gun away. He was taken to the Kandiyohi County Jail.
