Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley is seeking volunteers this week to help pack one million meals for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
The church has raised has raised $75,000 to pay for the emergency meals, which will go to the Christian nonprofit Feed My Starving Children, for distribution on the ground in Haiti. Each freeze-dried meal contains protein and rice. They are hoping to raise $95,000 more.
Church Outreach Director Dawn Dresser says the food drive was planned before the massive January 12 earthquake struck Haiti. she says the disaster has helped bring attention to one of the world's poorest countries.
"It focuses on Haiti, and gets people to understand that there is a need down there," said Dresser. "Hopefully that focus does not die out quickly, and we can deal with some of the systemic problems that are there."
Haiti has been devastated by the earthquake, which officials say killed tens of thousands of people and destroyed three-quarters of the country's capital city, Port-au-Prince.
