3 years probation, jail ordered in Wis. camp death

The former director of a northern Wisconsin camp for the developmentally disabled has been sentenced to six months in jail and three years probation for the death of a woman in her care.

A Washburn County judge also ordered 68-year-old Marjorie Hjelseth of Roseville, Minn., to visit the grave of the woman who died.

Forty-nine-year-old Shirley Meade died at Trade Lake camp in Grantsburg on July 17, 2008, after Hjelseth gave her an antipsychotic drug prescribed for another camper. Hjelseth said she did not call 911 after she realized the mistake because she feared the camp would be shut down.

Judge Eugene Harrington Wednesday ordered Hjelseth to visit the grave on Meade's birthday and the anniversary of her death. The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says the camp has been closed.
