Minnesota State-Mankato eyes program eliminations

Administrators at Minnesota State University in Mankato have proposed eliminating the school's aviation, computer science, undergraduate music programs and others as they look to a likely $6 million to $10 million deficit in 2012.

That means the need to cut faculty. Campus officials encouraged voluntary retirements last year, but the 20 faculty members who signed up fell far short of the administration's hopes for 60.

The programs targeted for elimination are low on students and credit hours. But their backers will still have the chance to make a case for them.

Other programs targeted for elimination include undergraduate journalism and food science technology, as well as graduate programs in physics, environmental science and two math programs.
