Minn. legislators seek new drug industry controls

Ahead of next week's legislative session start, Minnesota lawmakers and health care watchdogs are outlining new controls they want placed on prescription drugmakers.

Four Democratic legislators planned to discuss the proposed regulations Monday.

Their proposal includes tougher curbs on gifts to doctors and other health providers by pharmaceutical companies and medical device manufacturers. It would also clamp down on access to doctor prescribing records for marketing aims.

The general counsel for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America warns that the legislation "could have a chilling effect" on Minnesota's life sciences research. PhRMA says that sector supports 49,000 jobs in the state.
