35 Minn. GM, Chrysler dealers appeal closures

Thirty-five Minnesota auto dealers whose franchises were terminated as part of General Motors and Chrysler bankruptcies are appealing to stay in business.

The Minnesota Auto Dealers Association said Wednesday the affected dealers will pursue binding arbitration to seek reinstatement under a new federal law.

Scott Lambert, the group's executive vice president, says he wishes the companies will allow those dealers back into the mix voluntarily to avoid the millions of dollars in expected legal costs on both sides.

Dealers faced a Monday deadline to file for arbitration. Nineteen dealers in Minnesota that sell cars from the two brands either have closed or will close no matter what. Lambert says 1,500 jobs are at stake with the others.
