Asian carp summit to be Feb. 8 at White House
Three governors intent on keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes are taking their concerns to the White House.
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm's office on Thursday said she will attend the Feb. 8 meeting with Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.
Michigan and four other states are pressing a lawsuit demanding closure of the Chicago shipping locks and gates that could give the carp entry to the Great Lakes.
The U.S. Supreme Court last week rejected the states' request for an immediate order. Illinois and the White House say there's no guarantee closing the locks would block the carp's path.
At the meeting will be officials from the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Environmental Protection Agency, Interior Department, Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard.
