Major flooding forecast in Red River Valley

The National Weather Service says conditions are setting up for significant spring flooding in the Red River Valley.

The weather service says in a flood forecast released Friday that there is an 86 percent chance of major flooding on the Red River at Fargo. Flood stage is 18 feet. Major flood stage is 30 feet.

Last spring, Fargo residents fought off two crests of the Red River - the first at a record 40.82 feet and the second at 34 feet.

The Army Corps of Engineers says it plans to draw down reservoirs in the Red River basin to maximum levels to better handle spring runoff.
