Austin mayor drops probe of former police chief

The mayor of Austin has stopped an investigation into a complaint against Police Chief Paul Philipp that was filed before the chief retired last month.

The Post-Bulletin of Rochester reports that Mayor Tom Stiehm said Thursday that even if Philipp were still a city employee, the city wouldn't discipline him over the complaint.

Stiehm said he couldn't divulge the substance of the complaint, and would not identify the person who made the allegation.

When Philipp announced his retirement from the department on Jan. 18, he cited the complaint as the reason. He said the allegations were untrue.

City personnel director Tricia Wiechmann says information came to light during the investigation that prompted the mayor to stop the process. She wouldn't elaborate. ---
