Bill would end asset test for food stamps

A Senate panel looks at legislation Tuesday that would allow more people to qualify for food stamps.

The bill from Democratic Sen. Linda Berglin of Minneapolis would repeal a requirement to show no more than $7,000 in assets such as cash, money in the bank and stocks to qualify for food support. Vehicles already are not counted.

Advocates for food shelves say the change would help tens of thousands of Minnesotans qualify for food stamps without spending down all their resources.

Some Republicans have questioned whether the proposal would allow those with fancy cars and other valuables to use a public benefit.

Berglin heads the Senate Health and Human Services Budget Division, which will hear the bill.
