Duluth city workers OK new contract

Duluth city workers have voted overwhelmingly to accept a contract offer that averted a threatened strike.

The city of Duluth announced Wednesday that members of AFSCME Local 66 ratified the one-year agreement.

The union represents more than 450 city workers, including snowplow operators, gas line repair workers and bridge operators. The union had sought a longer-term contract but agreed to a one-year settlement consistent with deals the city already had struck with smaller unions.

The new contract freezes pay at last year's levels.

The tentative agreement was reached on March 4. Last month, union members voted to authorize a strike.
