Boy killed in Pine River school bus accident

A 6-year-old boy has died in a school bus accident south of the central Minnesota town of Pine River.

The Brainerd Dispatch reports the boy was a Pine River-Backus Elementary School student. It says he was struck after exiting the bus Monday afternoon.

The name of the student were not immediately released. School and law enforcement officials are releasing few details about the accident.

Kristil McDonald, the principal at Pine River-Backus High School, told the newspaper a crisis team was convened and that members had contacted all the families of students who were on the bus at the time of the accident. The crisis team will be available to staff, students and community members Tuesday at the school.

Pine River is about 20 miles north of Brainerd.
