Minnesota group urges diabetes prevention

Minnesotans are being urged to know the symptoms of diabetes and their risks for developing the disease on American Diabetes Alert Day on Tuesday.

The Minnesota Diabetes and Heart Health Collaborative says almost 1.6 million Minnesotans have diabetes or pre-diabetes, a condition in which blood sugar is elevated but isn't considered diabetes.

Some of the risk factors for the disease include being overweight, physically inactive and over the age of 45. Certain ethnic groups also have an increased risk. A diabetes risk test is available at www.stopdiabetes.com.

To reduce the risk of developing the disease, the group recommends getting 30 minutes of exercise a day, eating a balance diet with fruits and vegetables and, if you're overweight, losing a few pounds.
