Streets used after bridge collapse to be resurfaced

Motorists in downtown Minneapolis who had to find a detour after the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed might have to find yet another detour as those streets are repaired.

City officials said $2.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration's emergency relief funding will be available to resurface the streets that were used heavily for 13 months until the new bridge opened.

City officials said nearly six miles of streets will get a mill and overlay treatment, which involves removing the top layer of asphalt and replacing it with a new surface. In addition, about 1,000 feet of roadway will be seal coated.

The city is holding two events in April to provide information about the resurfacing to residents and businesses.

The streets that will be treated are: Third Street South, Sixth Street South, Seventh Street South, Fourth Avenue South, Fifth Avenue South, 10th/19th Avenue, 15th Avenue Southeast, 18th Avenue Southeast, Industrial Boulevard and 25th/26th Avenue South.

Bike lanes might be added to some of those streets as well.
