Carter to volunteer in Minn. on housing rehab

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity officials are preparing for an October visit by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn.

The Carters will spend two days building and repairing houses in Minneapolis and St. Paul. They'll work alongside local volunteers, who'll tackle 20 projects that week.

During a news conference Tuesday, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman said the visit is recognition of the neighborhood revitalization efforts of both cities. Coleman said he is excited and honored to host the Carters.

"They won't just be here kind of doing photo ops. They'll be out there working as they have done in the past," Coleman said. "They are truly remarkable individuals. I mean, Jimmy Carter has gone on to be singularly the most important ex-president this country has ever had."

Habitat for Humanity officials said the October projects will target 10 houses in North Minneapolis and 10 houses in East St. Paul, many are foreclosed properties.
