Superior Diocese suspends retired priest over sexual misconduct allegations

The Diocese of Superior has suspended a retired Catholic priest from church activities while police investigate allegations of sexual misconduct.

Douglas County District Attorney Dan Blank says an attorney for the diocese contacted him with "vague allegations" and he turned the matter over to Superior police.

Diocese spokesman Richard Lyons says a social worker alleged March 31 that the priest engaged in sexual activity with a young man. Lyons says the alleged victim is 18 now but Lyons isn't sure how old he was at the time of the alleged misconduct.

He also says he's not sure how the social worker knew of the alleged activity.

Lyons says church policies require an automatic suspension.

Superior police did not immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
