Officials investigate death of Minn. Marine at NC base

Officials are investigating the death of a Marine from Coon Rapids, Minn., who was found dead in his barracks in North Carolina during an afternoon inspection.

The Marine Corps said in a news release Friday that Lance Cpl. Daniel W. Sweeney, 20, died Wednesday. The cause of his death was still under investigation.

Sweeney had been in the Marines for 19 months and was an AV-8B aircraft mechanic. He was assigned to the Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 (VMAT-203), 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, at Cherry Point, N.C.

He graduated from boot camp in San Diego and combat training at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

A relative who did not want to be identified told MPR the family is in the process of making funeral arrangements for Sweeney.

The funeral is expected to be held in Minnesota. No further information was available Saturday.
