Minn. Senate votes to ease campus stadium beer ban
The Minnesota Senate has voted to relax a booze ban at the University of Minnesota's campus football stadium.
The Senate gave preliminary approval Tuesday to a bill that allowing the school to control where alcohol is sold at the year-old TCF Bank Stadium. It reverses a law that required alcohol to be sold everywhere in the stadium or nowhere.
Last year, university regents banned all alcohol to keep it from the student section. The school had intended to sell it in premium seats and suites.
As Republican Geoff Michel put it, the Senate "shouldn't act as some 67-member liquor control board."
The bill faces resistance in the Minnesota House.
Net revenue from booze sales would be used for athletic scholarships and reduced student fees.
