Some Minnesota lawmakers want to take precautions in case one of their own is called into military service.
Democratic Rep. Roger Reinert is proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow the Legislature to temporarily replace a member called to active duty. It would be up to voters whether to approve the amendment if it's on the ballot this fall.
The legislation is being heard in a House committee Wednesday.
The bill would have lawmakers who might be activated submit a list of three possible successors. The successor would be picked by respective House and Senate leaders.
They would sit in until the original member returns from duty and couldn't serve beyond the lawmaker's term.
Reinert, of Duluth, is a member of Navy Reserve.
