Minn. Chamber seeks freedom to spend on elections

The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce is asking a federal judge to declare unconstitutional a state law barring corporations from making independent expenditures on behalf of political candidates.

The Chamber is citing a major U.S. Supreme Court ruling in January that struck down a similar federal law.

In papers filed ahead of a hearing set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul, the Chamber says the law prevents the business advocacy group and its members from exercising their free speech rights.

The Ramsey County attorney's office has conceded that the types of campaign activities the Chamber says it wants to engage in are now protected. But it also asserts the state law regulates activities beyond those allowed by the Supreme Court ruling.
