Two arrested for aiding shooting suspects are released

The two people St. Paul police arrested in connection with the shooting death of the Maplewood police officer have been released from jail without being charged.

Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner said the investigation continues into the incident, and that charges against the two could come later.

The 21-year-old man and 23-year-old woman had been arrested for allegedly aiding at least one of the two shooting suspects -- Joshua Michael Martin.

"This case obviously is very serious and complicated. We haven't even been able to review all the reports that were prepared," Gaertner said. "Once we know all the circumstances of the tragic events of this past weekend we will make a decision then."

Martin was charged Monday with aiding and abetting second-degree murder in the death of Maplewood Police Sgt. Joseph Bergeron on Saturday. He remains in the Ramsey County jail.

The other suspect, Jason Jones, was shot and killed by police.

Gaertner said the two people released Tuesday are not likely to flee, so it made sense to release them for now.
