Semi loaded with turkeys overturns north of St. Cloud

A semitrailer loaded with live turkeys overturned in Stearns County Tuesday, injuring the driver and killing some of the birds.

Sheriff's officials say the Jennie-O Turkey truck, carrying dozens of birds, rolled over on county Highway 65 east of Melrose about 7 a.m.

Authorities say the driver fell through the broken windshield of the cab when he released his seat belt. He was taken to Melrose Hospital, then airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital, which did not immediately have a condition report.

Sheriff's officials estimated the truck was carrying 100 or more turkeys, but did not know how many were killed. Jennie-O transferred the birds to another trailer.
