Fargo apartment fire displaces some residents

No one was injured when an early morning fire forced the evacuation of a three-story apartment building in south Fargo.

Fire Capt. Leroy Skarloken says about 30 people fled the smoke-filled building, out first- and second-floor windows. Firefighters used ladders to help others escape. He says it was "pretty intense" for a while.

The blaze was reported at 1 a.m. Monday. Skarloken says it started on or near the stovetop in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment. The cause is under investigation.

The apartment building had moderate smoke and fire damage and light water damage. About half of the building's tenants were displaced. The Salvation Army and Red Cross were helping them.
