Wis. governor signs snowmobile speed limit

Snowmobilers in Wisconsin will have to slow down after the sun sets under a bill Gov. Jim Doyle has signed.

The measure establishes a permanent 55 mph speed limit for snowmobilers after dark. The speed limit has been in place off and on since 2006 but was set to expire July 1 if lawmakers didn't act.

Supporters say the speed limit will help reduce crashes and fatalities. As many as three dozen or more people have died in one year in Wisconsin snowmobile crashes.
