Police ID pedestrian hit by car near Mississippi River

St. Paul police have identified the pedestrian who was critically injured after being hit by a car near the Mississippi River late Wednesday night.

Cordell Edward Townsell, 54, remains at Regions Hospital in critical condition. Police spokesman Paul Schnell said the man walked into the street near Warner Road and Jackson Street, and was hit by a vehicle that had the right of way.

Investigators had issued a public plea for help with identifying the man. Officials said they were able to identify Townsell on Friday after tracking down acquaintances who connected officers with a relative.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Townsell is cooperating with investigators and is not expected to face charges, police said.
