Man gets 9-years-plus in deadly N. Minn. crash

A judge in northern Minnesota has given a Twin Cities-area man a sentence double the normal guidelines after a deadly crash.

The crash on Nov. 8, 2009, killed 27-year-old Jon Baskey of Anoka. He was a passenger in a truck driven by 28-year-old Michael Patrick Skubitz, of Oak Grove. Prosecutors say Skubitz's blood alcohol level was 0.20 percent, 2½ times the legal limit.

On Monday, an Itasca County judge sentenced Skubitz to nine years and eight months in prison and ordered him to reimburse Baskey's family for nearly $10,000 in funeral expenses.

Skubitz had pleaded guilty to one count of criminal vehicular homicide. Prosecutors dropped three other counts. He had three prior DWI convictions and multiple probation violations.
