2 charged with beating 6-year-old boy

A Minneapolis man and his girlfriend are accused of assault in what prosecutors say was the whipping of the woman's 6-year-old son.

Troy Lamont Clay, 31, is charged with first-degree assault, and a warrant was issued for the woman's arrest.

A criminal complaint in Hennepin County accuses Clay of tying the boy's hands around a basement post at a north Minneapolis home and whipping the child with an extension cord on May 18.

The complaint says Clay did it at his girlfriend's request because the boy was misbehaving in school. The boy was treated at a hospital overnight for his injuries.

Clay was in the county jail Thursday, where a jail official said he couldn't take a phone call for comment. He faced a first court appearance Friday.
