Watch out for loons Memorial Day weekend

The Department of Natural Resources asks Minnesotans to keep an eye out for the state bird, the common loon, this Memorial Day weekend.

The DNR says it's a hazardous weekend for loons because they are incubating eggs now. Fourth of July also is a problem weekend for loons.

To avoid scaring a loon from its eggs, boaters, canoeists and kayakers should stay at least 100 feet from loon nests.

If a loon leaves the nest, crows, ravens or gulls could eat the eggs before the loon returns. (Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
