Gypsy moth traps being set across Wisconsin

Gypsy moth traps are being tied onto trees across western and central Wisconsin to better understand where the invasive pests are.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says the goal is to set nearly 30,000 traps in 45 counties by early July.

The traps are used as a way to gauge the population of gypsy moths, not as a way to control their numbers.

Gypsy moth trapping coordinator Chris Whitney says the traps help the state determine where aerial spray treatment should be done the following year.

When in its caterpillar stage, the gypsy moth is known to defoliate many species of trees and shrubs, especially oaks.
