Edina student eliminated at National Spelling Bee

A middle school student from Edina was eliminated in the semifinal round of the National Spelling Bee in Washington Friday.

Thirteen-year-old Anja Beth Swoap is a seventh-grader from Valley View Middle School. She advanced Friday morning by correctly spelling "kanban," which is a card used on assembly lines to show parts are needed. But Swoap was later tripped up by the word "icteritious" which is the color of jaundice skin.

It's Swoap's second consecutive year at the national championship, which began with 273 spellers. The champion spelling wins a trophy and more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
