Plane crash victims were on leisure flight

An Olmsted County sheriff's official said the three people killed in a plane crash near Rochester were on a leisure flight from the Twin Cities.

Sheriff's Capt. Kevin Torgerson told the Post-Bulletin of Rochester that two of the victims were on a trip to the Twin Cities from Florida. He said a friend from the Twin Cities joined them on the plane ride Wednesday night.

Torgerson said the three aboard the 1957 Piper intended to fly around for a couple hours before returning to the Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie. He said the pilot reported engine trouble shortly before midnight.

The sheriff's department received a 911 call minutes later from a witness who said the plane had crashed in the woods near his house and was on fire.

The victims were removed from the wreckage Thursday, but have not yet been identified.
