1972: Love and hate for the Mary Tyler Moore show
In 1972, Minneapolis alderman John Derris sponsored a proclamation thanking the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" for helping promote the city.
After all, the show featured scenes from the city in its opening montage, ending in the Mary's iconic hat toss.
Much later, the city would install a statue to commemorate the show and the hat toss. Tourists head to the corner of Nicollet Mall and 7th Street South to pay homage.
The curious came long before the statue was erected in 2002. They wanted to find the places Mary had been, especially her house.
Most episodes of the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" show an exterior shot of the house and Mary either coming or going. As recently as 2007, the actual house was up for sale.
