Repairs to begin on Winona bridge

Motorists can expect delays as repairs begin Tuesday on three gusset plates on the Highway 43 bridge over the Mississippi River in Winona.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the equipment needed to complete the repairs requires a lane closure, and traffic will be reduced to a single lane from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Both lanes will be open each evening.

MnDOT says corrosion was found on several gusset plates during last week's in-depth bridge inspection.

Repair work may continue into next week. MnDOT expects both lanes will be open over the Fourth of July weekend.

The bridge is scheduled for a major overhaul or replacement in 2014.
