Mississippi River drawdown near Winona begins

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hoping to reduce water levels in the Mississippi River near Winona.

The Corps' St. Paul office and the Water Level Management Task Force started drawing down the Upper Mississippi River Pool 6 on June 18 and plan to continue until Sept. 30.

The Corps hopes to expose up to 500 acres of mudflats, making the flats more favorable for growth and reproduction of vital aquatic vegetation.

The Post-Bulletin reports the drawdown should not affect boating, but boaters should use caution.
