Exploding fireworks shell injures Minnesota man

Douglas County officials said a fireworks shell exploded in a man's face over the holiday weekend, causing severe injuries to his skin and eyes.

Thomas Pierce, 31, was trying to light the fireworks on Saturday night when the shell ignited. He suffered scaling burns to his eyes and a deep cut to his face. Pierce was taken to the Douglas County Hospital for treatment. County officials said they do not know if he has been released.

The accident occurred near Little Mary, Minn., about 11 miles southwest of Alexandria.

Douglas County Sheriff's officials said they did not receive reports of any other serious injuries caused by fireworks this weekend.
